Leisure Island falls within the Garden Route National Park

The Environment

Leisure Island falls within the Garden Route National Park, and the Knysna Protected Environment.

The coastal zone surrounding the Island is under the custodianship of SANParks, and a large percentage of the Island’s land area is municipal public open space. LIRA works closely with the authorities to ensure that our environmental heritage is protected. LIRA plays a leading role in managing Steenbok Reserve and the seawall, and residents contribute both the resources and the funding for these assets.

LIRA also has an arrangement with the municipality to maintain the many smaller parks that are a feature of Leisure Isle. Residents are also encouraged to improve and maintain public open spaces.

The Island has a fresh water aquifer some three meters below ground level. Although not drinkable, the aquifer water is easily accessed for irrigation of gardens and lawns.
