About LIRA
The Leisure Isle Residents’ Association (LIRA) is a voluntary organization supported by a majority of residents and homeowners. Established in 2000, LIRA ensures that the Island’s natural heritage is nurtured, that the area is peaceful and secure, and that collaborative relationships are maintained with the Municipality and other authorities and stakeholders.
Regular LIRA Newsletters keep members informed of Island matters, and the LIRA WhatsApp group posts current events and important notices.
LIRA interacts with a wide variety of organizations. We have strong working relationships with officials from the Knysna Municipality, and engage with and assist them to ensure the Island receives appropriate levels of services.
We meet with SANParks on matters concerning the Island’s natural environments and seawalls and the Steenbok Reserve. Best practices are followed and all our activities are compliant with the environmental regulations.
We engage with various safety and security authorities, including the Community Police Forum, the South African Police Services, and with Municipal Law Enforcement and Traffic officials. We also meet with other residents’ and homeowners’ associations, and share information and collaborate on matters of common interest. We participate in and support local citizens’ initiatives. The Island is in Knysna’s Ward 9, and an Island representative sits on the Councilor’s Ward Committee.
Our Island community expects all homeowners and residents, and the Island’s clubs and businesses, to become LIRA members. High membership levels have a number of advantages: levies are kept lower if all contribute; more funds are available for Island improvements; and high membership numbers increase our credibility when dealing with the authorities.
