Dear Fellow Islander,

Along with the official AGM notice, we will shortly be sending out our annual Committee report full of detail about LIRA's year - but in the meantime, we are keen to share with you some great work that we've had rolled out in the past few weeks.

We trust you will be pleased with these long-awaited improvements implemented ahead of the Festive Season - as were outlined in our October newsletter.

Seawall repairs - at last!

Years in the planning, days in the doing! Work began on Monday 17 November, and was mostly done by the same Friday.

Above & left: B&V Construction at work carefully removing and repositioning the timber seawall at Bollard Beach.

All work had to be done strictly in accordance with our environmental authorisations.

This is the first step in repairing the seawalls, and we look forward to the Municipality continuing with the repair work.

Below: The repaired and repositioned timber pole seawall, set back slightly from its original siting, with back-filled picnic area behind.

Below: The retaining wall constructed to save the lovely old milkwood at Bollard, with repairs to the lower stone seawall, and the extended stormwater pipe.

New beach signage and bins

Here are the first of the new signs and extra refuse bins that we'll be locating at various spots around the island. Another great improvement to the faded, haphazard signs currently in place.

New fencing at Bollard

The new fencing looks terrific, and does its job of keeping cars off the dunes, protecting them from wear and tear.

The fencing was supplied by Epilepsy SA in Knysna, and we were happy to give much-needed business to this worthy NGO.

Thanks to Mark Sofianos and Blue Waters Construction for donating the labour to erect the fence.

Improvements to Green Hole toilet block

Thanks to generous donations of time, labour and money from a number of Islanders, we have made considerable improvements to this much-used facility. Keith Hollis, Dick Goulee, David Vogel, Arjen Meter and Dave Stromberg all contributed.

Japie Strydom of Strydom Plumbing kindly did all the plumbing work at his own cost.

The roof was cleaned, repaired and painted, and new rooflights fitted. The building was repainted in a green theme, doors rehung, and signage upgraded. Plumbing leaks were repaired, and new pipework and soak-away drains built. The municipality provided the new front brick paving.

Maintaining verges and Steenbok Reserve

We're sure all residents are impressed with the regular grass cutting that KM has done through the year. The Steenbok lawn is in great shape despite the big salty dousing it had a few weeks ago when the reserve flooded.

New watering station for our furry friends!

Great pals and dog lovers, Joce Duff from The Heads and Joy Renwick of Leisure Isle (pictured below), decided that the island needed another watering hole for our many furry visitors. They got to work, found an apt tap near the security hut, bought a water basin, and have set up the station, and added the signage (kindly sponsored by Joce) with the blessing of KAWS. Nice work, ladies!

Not forgetting there is another watering hole at the hand pump site in Steenbok.
