Construction at LI's 4-way stop
Dear Leisure Islander...

Those of you resident may have noted that some construction activity started today at the entrance to the island – and this is to let you know what’s happening.

For several months, your Committee has been lobbying the KM (Knysna Municipality) to implement some sort of traffic-calming/speed control, particularly for cars approaching the north side of the four-way stop from Kings Way. The reason? It has been apparent that the stop sign here, as well as at the other three points of the intersection, is increasingly being ignored or regarded as a mere yield, and we feared this situation equalled accidents waiting to happen.

Just this week, the KM informed us that work was about to begin on creating a raised intersection at the site – in effect, creating a traffic-calming effect from all four directions approaching the intersection.

This will be a gentle gradient, designed in accordance with KM's traffic-calming guidelines, and the intersection will be paved.
The construction work will be done in two phases. The intersection is divided into a Northern (phase 1) and a Southern (phase 2) section. Traffic will be controlled by the contractor’s flag men during working hours, and special care will be taken during peak traffic hours to ensure safe flow of traffic.

Sign boards will be placed on the approaching roads notifying residents of construction work ahead.

We apologise for any inconvenience during the construction.

LIRA is heartened to have this meaningful KM action and infrastructure improvement taking place on LI! We think this a good solution to the problem - and one that is both functional and aesthetic. We appreciate our Ward 9 councillor, Mark Willemse's support in making this happen.

Kind regards,
Paul Kotze
