LIRA Letter - 10 June 2017

Dear Leisure Islander...

Your LIRA Committee, and several other concerned residents, have just met to put a contingency plan together to protect LI in the event of any fire starting on the island.

In light of the current strong winds, and those predicted to perhaps run into the night and tomorrow, there's no room for complacency in these awful and unpredictable conditions, and we believe it's essential to be prepared should sparks, coals or tinders fly across the water.

We have thus set up watch teams who will patrol the island, in two-hourly shifts, on a 24-hour basis, until the danger abates.

These teams will be communication via a WhatsApp group, while Ricky Maskew will head the Ops Command at his 49 Cearn Drive home.

Please email him,, if you would like to join our patrols.

We further advise that residents who have SPIKE water keep their gardens well watered; damp is a good antidote to fire. Also, it's advisable to keep filled buckets, as well as mops and spades to hand, and have hoses linked to taps. Wet mops are good for killing coals etc.

Dylan Handel, our resident gardening man, has a 1000 litre Jo-Jo drum on his truck, our own fire engine so to speak. BUT he needs a petrol/water pump to discharge the water.

Does anyone have such a pump? Call him at 082 448 2140 if you can help.

Dylan also has a chain saw if you need help with getting branches, trees etc cut down.

Keep alert! If you see anything untoward on LI, along George Rex, or on the Heads, please call Keith Hollis at 082 442 9290 or Ingrid Meter 083 408 9420.

Strength to our blighted town and its brave residents!
