Gardening at Leisure is an active garden club consisting of about 80 members, who meet at different venues on the first Friday of every month excluding January and July. Anyone may become a member, and visitors are most welcome. Subs are R100 pa, and visitors pay R15.

Our programmes are varied and include visits to lovely gardens on the Island and elsewhere. Visits have been arranged to a rose farm in Plettenberg Bay and a Persimmon farm. A talk by CREW (Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wild Flowers) was a recent highlight.

Future meetings include a talk by Sue Swain on Bio-mimicry, a talk on Diatomaceous Earth and its uses to mankind, a talk by the famous bird man Peter Ginn on Gardening for Birds, a talk on the growing of Clivias and the showing of the Chelsea Flower Show video.

Members are asked to be a tea hostess not more than once a year, which entails supplying two plates of eats for a meeting and making and pouring tea and tidying up afterwards. Members and visitors are asked to bring their own cup and chair to the meetings.

Newsletters are emailed or posted to members once a month. Birthday cards are given to members together with a gift voucher from a local nursery. Other nurseries and garden centres also donate vouchers as prizes, which are given as lucky draws.
